Psalms is a collection of songs of praise and prayer, lament and thanksgiving, the communion of people with God. It holds the confession of persons and of the community, a treasury of worship and meditation.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — It includes psalms of David, Asaph, the sons of Korah, and others, received as written and gathered under God’s inspiration.
  • Date of writing — Written and compiled across the patriarchs, the monarchy, exile, and return. Its final form is placed late in the Old Testament period.
  • Historical setting — Songs in which Israel sought, praised, and cried to God in worship, war, suffering, and restoration.

Purpose of writing

  • God gave the language of praise, thanks, lament, and repentance, so that saints commune with him in worship and prayer.
  • It sings hope in the Messiah and the kingdom, and love for the law and the covenant, and lights the way of faith.
  • It is a word so that believers today pray and praise with the words of the Psalms in joy and in sorrow.
