Obadiah Audio Sermons
Obadiah is the shortest Minor Prophet book (one chapter, 21 verses). It prophesies judgment on the brother nation Edom and Judah’s restoration. It charges Edom, the descendants of Esau, with betraying a brother when Jerusalem fell, and declares that every nation will be judged on the day of the LORD.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Obadiah the prophet wrote under God’s inspiration (Obad. 1).
- Date of writing — Some place it about 586 BC, just after Jerusalem fell; others about 845 BC, in Jehoram’s reign. Scholars differ.
- Historical setting — Edom lay south of Judah. When Babylon attacked Jerusalem, Edom did not help its brother and even plundered and hindered (Obad. 10–14; Ps. 137:7; Jer. 49:7–22).
Purpose of writing
- He proclaimed God’s judgment on Edom’s violence, pride, and joy over Jerusalem’s fall (Obad. 10–16).
- “The day of the LORD is near upon all the nations” (Obad. 15): every nation will stand before God’s justice.
- “Saviors shall go up to Mount Zion to rule Mount Esau, and the kingdom shall be the LORD’s” (Obad. 21). Saints under oppression and betrayal are to hope in God’s restoration.
