Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament. The temple stood after the return, but faith had grown cold. It proclaims faithfulness to the covenant and the coming day of the LORD.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Malachi the prophet wrote under God’s inspiration (Mal. 1:1). His name means “my messenger.”
  • Date of writing — The middle of the fifth century BC, late in the post-exilic period, near the time of Nehemiah.
  • Historical setting — After the temple was rebuilt, formal worship, neglected tithes, divorce, and injustice were widespread. The book speaks in dialogue about God’s love and judgment.

Purpose of writing

  • He rebuked polluted offerings and a corrupted covenant, and required true fear and whole devotion (Mal. 1–2).
  • He promised blessing on tithes and offerings (Mal. 3:8–12), and the sun of righteousness for those who fear his name (Mal. 3:16; 4:2).
  • He closed the Old Testament by announcing a messenger like Elijah and the great and awesome day of the LORD (Mal. 4:5–6), pointing hope toward John the Baptist and Christ.
