Lamentations Audio Sermons
Lamentations mourns the destruction of Jerusalem’s temple and city in 586 BC. In the Hebrew Bible it is sometimes joined to Jeremiah. It sings the grief of ruin, repentance, and God’s mercy.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Jeremiah is traditionally held to have written it under God’s inspiration, though the book does not name its author.
- Date of writing — Just after Jerusalem fell in 586 BC, as the Babylonian exile began.
- Historical setting — Babylon burned the temple and laid the city waste. The book is set in the pain and despair of the exiles and of those who remained.
Purpose of writing
- In lament it sets out the ruin of temple and city and the people’s pain, and leads them to deep repentance for sin.
- “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end” (Lam. 3:22–23). It holds them to God’s mercy and to hope.
- After judgment it teaches a posture of repentance and of looking to God’s compassion, and comforts believers in trouble.
