Jonah tells how the prophet was sent to preach repentance in Nineveh, disobeyed, and then learned God’s sovereignty and mercy through the great fish and the plant. Saving grace that reaches even the nations stands at its center.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Jonah wrote around his own ministry, under God’s inspiration (Jonah 1:1).
  • Date of writing — The eighth century BC, commonly linked with Jeroboam II of Israel (2 Kgs. 14:25).
  • Historical setting — Nineveh, capital of Assyria, was the heart of a Gentile power that threatened Israel. The heart of the story is a prophet sent to preach salvation to a city like an enemy.

Purpose of writing

  • God turns even a disobedient prophet, and through the fish and the storm shows his sovereignty (Jonah 1–2).
  • Nineveh repents and God relents (Jonah 3), showing mercy and a chance to repent even for Gentiles.
  • The plant teaches God’s care for “persons who do not know their right hand from their left” (Jonah 4:11), and calls believers out of a narrow love.
