Habakkuk questions God’s justice and sovereignty, and receives the answer to live by faith.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Habakkuk the prophet wrote under God’s inspiration (Hab. 1:1).
  • Date of writing — About 609–605 BC, in the days of Josiah and Jehoiakim of Judah.
  • Historical setting — Injustice filled Judah and Babylon’s invasion was near. The prophet asked God “why” (Hab. 1:2–3).

Purpose of writing

  • Even when the wicked seem to prosper, God rules history and will raise up Babylon to judge (Hab. 1:5–11).
  • “The righteous shall live by his faith” (Hab. 2:4) teaches a faith that waits humbly on God.
  • The prayer that praises God in trouble (Hab. 3:17–19) leads believers in the last days to trust God’s salvation.
