Esther records Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews in the Persian Empire, and their deliverance through Esther and Mordecai. God’s name is not spoken, yet hidden providence and timing stand at its center.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — The author is not named. A Jewish writer familiar with the Persian court is thought to have written it under God’s inspiration.
  • Date of writing — The fifth century BC, in the reign of Ahasuerus (Xerxes).
  • Historical setting — Jews scattered through the empire faced Haman’s plot of slaughter. Queen Esther and Mordecai saved their people by fasting and courage.

Purpose of writing

  • Even where God’s name is not spoken, he keeps his people by providence and “for such a time as this” (Esth. 4:14).
  • Esther’s decision and Mordecai’s faithfulness overturn Haman’s plot, and the Jews are saved.
  • It leaves the origin of Purim, and calls believers to trust God’s hidden hand in a crisis.
