2 Samuel Audio Sermons
2 Samuel records the earlier reign of David (about 1010–970 BC). Victory and sin, repentance, and the covenant with David stand at its center.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Nathan, Gad, and other prophets of David’s day wrote (1 Chr. 29:29), and it was later arranged under God’s inspiration.
- Date of writing — David’s reign, about 1010–970 BC. It may have been arranged after Solomon’s accession or when Kings was compiled.
- Historical setting — David became king of Israel and Judah, made Jerusalem his capital, and subdued the Philistines, then faced the matter of Uriah and Absalom’s revolt.
Purpose of writing
- David’s victories show God leading his people and fulfilling his promise.
- “Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever” (2 Sam. 7:16): the Davidic covenant lays the foundation of the messianic kingdom.
- David’s sin and repentance (Psalm 51) show a God who judges and still shows mercy, and give believers hope in repentance and covenant.
