Numbers Audio Sermons
Numbers records the census in the wilderness, the departure and the camp, disobedience and judgment, and forty years of wandering. It is the book of the wilderness journey, leadership, and obedience.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Moses wrote under God’s inspiration during the forty years in the wilderness.
- Date of writing — From leaving Sinai to the plains of Moab, covering the spying out of Canaan and the forty years of wandering.
- Historical setting — After the spies returned, unbelief left that generation in the wilderness for forty years, until a new generation stood at the door of the promised land.
Purpose of writing
- Even in the wilderness God leads and keeps his covenant, showing both discipline for disobedience and mercy.
- Through the duties of the priests and Levites, the order of the camp, and the events of spying and rebellion, he teaches how much leadership that obeys God’s word matters.
- The wilderness road is a mirror for God’s people today as they pass through a spiritual wilderness and hope for rest and heaven. It also contains prophecy of the Messiah (Num. 24:17 and others).
