Leviticus Audio Sermons
Leviticus teaches the offerings, feasts, purity, and holy living of worship at the tabernacle. The law of priesthood, worship, and holiness stands at its center.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Moses recorded, under God’s inspiration, the revelation he received at Sinai and in the tabernacle.
- Date of writing — Written in the wilderness after the exodus, once the tabernacle had been set up and before Israel entered Canaan.
- Historical setting — Written for Israel worshiping around the tabernacle in the wilderness, to teach the duties of the Levites—priests and servants of the tent—and the people’s way of holy living.
Purpose of writing
- It teaches how to bring sacrifice and worship before the holy God: the burnt offering, the sin offering, the guilt offering, and others.
- Through the feasts—Passover, Weeks, the Day of Atonement, and others—and the laws of purity and food, God calls his people to a life set apart.
- The bodily sacrifices and statutes are a shadow of the atonement and holiness that Jesus Christ would fulfill (Col. 2:17), and they guide believers today to fear God and live in holiness.
