Joshua records how Joshua, Moses’ successor, led Israel into Canaan, conquered the promised land, and allotted it. The land of the covenant, obedience, and God’s leading are its heart.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Joshua and the writers of his day recorded it under God’s inspiration (2 Tim. 3:16). Some of it is thought to have been arranged by priests and Levites.
  • Date of writing — About 1406–1390 BC, the conquest and the allotment of the land. It may have been completed after Joshua’s death.
  • Historical setting — After Moses died on Nebo, Israel crossed the Jordan, took Jericho, subdued the peoples of Canaan, and divided the land among the twelve tribes.

Purpose of writing

  • God gave Israel the land he had promised Abraham, and showed that he keeps his covenant.
  • “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth” (Josh. 1:8): victory comes as they obey the word and rely on God.
  • The conquest is not only an earthly promised land. It is a shadow of entering rest in Christ (Heb. 4:8–10), so that believers trust and obey God’s promise.
