Jeremiah Audio Sermons
Jeremiah records the prophecy and ministry of Jeremiah around the fall of southern Judah. His name means “The LORD sends.” Stressing repentance, judgment, and the new covenant, he is called “the weeping prophet.”
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Jeremiah son of Hilkiah wrote under God’s inspiration, and his secretary Baruch wrote part of it (Jer. 1:1; 36:32).
- Date of writing — About 627–580 BC, some forty-eight years from Josiah, Jehoiakim, and Zedekiah through the exile and on into Egypt.
- Historical setting — Idolatry remained after Josiah’s reform. Babylon destroyed the temple (586 BC) and took the people captive. Jeremiah warned of the fall and called for true repentance.
Purpose of writing
- He proclaimed God’s judgment on Judah’s sin and idolatry—the Babylonian exile—and stressed salvation through true repentance.
- He foretold the new covenant, “I will put my law within them” (Jer. 31:33), and promised the righteous Branch of David, the Messiah (Jer. 23:5–6; 33:15–16).
- In suffering and tears he held them to God’s mercy and restoration. For believers today it is a word of repentance and the new covenant.
