Hosea Audio Sermons
Hosea exposes northern Israel’s betrayal through the picture of marriage and a household, and proclaims the unfailing love of the God who still turns back to them.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Hosea son of Beeri wrote under God’s inspiration (Hos. 1:1).
- Date of writing — The eighth century BC, from Jeroboam II of Israel until just before the fall, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.
- Historical setting — The northern kingdom looked prosperous, but idolatry and political and moral decay were deepening as Assyria drew near.
Purpose of writing
- He exposed Israel’s “whoredom” in leaving the LORD for other gods, and called for true repentance (Hos. 1–3; 4–10).
- Even in judgment, “How can I give you up?” (Hos. 11:8) shows a father’s love for his son.
- The invitation “Return to me” (Hos. 14:1–2) and the promise of restoration call believers today to answer God’s faithful love.
