Ezekiel Audio Sermons
Ezekiel records the prophecies and visions of Ezekiel in the Babylonian exile. His name means “God strengthens.” God’s glory, rebuke of sin, and Israel’s restoration stand at its center, and he is called “the prophet of visions.”
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Ezekiel the priest, son of Buzi, wrote under God’s inspiration (Ezek. 1:1–3).
- Date of writing — About 593–570 BC, some twenty-seven years by the Kebar canal in Babylon.
- Historical setting — Before and after the temple fell, he spoke God’s word among the exiles. In the despair of a ruined temple he proclaimed God’s rule and restoration.
Purpose of writing
- He proclaimed God’s glory (Ezek. 1; 10) and judgment on the sin of Israel and Judah, and showed the LORD’s faithfulness.
- Through the vision of breath entering dry bones (Ezek. 37) and the new temple and new covenant (Ezek. 40–48), he prophesied Israel’s restoration.
- God does not abandon his people when the temple falls. For believers today it is a word of rebuke and of hope for restoration.
