Exodus records Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt, the crossing of the Red Sea, and the giving of the law and the tabernacle at Sinai. It holds the heart of redemption, covenant, and the law.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Moses wrote under God’s inspiration, from the revelation received in the exodus and at Mount Sinai.
  • Date of writing — Written from just after the exodus (c. 1446 BC), during the wilderness journey, and especially after the law was given at Sinai.
  • Historical setting — After about four hundred years of slavery in Egypt, Israel is brought out from Pharaoh’s oppression by God’s hand. The ten plagues, the Passover, the crossing of the Red Sea, and life in the wilderness are the setting in which they enter covenant with God.

Purpose of writing

  • God saves the people he chose, gives the Ten Commandments and the rest of the law at Sinai, and establishes their covenant with him.
  • Through the tabernacle and the offerings, he lays the foundation of a priestly nation that lives with the holy God.
  • The exodus and the law are not for Israel alone. They guide believers redeemed by the blood of Christ through a spiritual wilderness, and they show the types of salvation history.
