Amos exposes northern Israel’s social injustice and empty religion, and demands that “justice roll down like waters” (Amos 5:24).

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Amos, a shepherd of Tekoa, wrote under God’s inspiration (Amos 1:1).
  • Date of writing — The eighth century BC, in the days of Jeroboam II of Israel and Uzziah of Judah.
  • Historical setting — The northern kingdom was wealthy, yet the gap between rich and poor, exploitation, and idolatry were widespread. A prophet from the south brought a word of judgment.

Purpose of writing

  • He listed the sins of the nations and of Israel and Judah, and declared that a privileged people is not exempt from judgment (Amos 1–2).
  • God seeks justice more than formal sacrifice (Amos 5:21–24), and warned that without repentance exile and ruin would come.
  • At the end he promised to raise up the booth of David (Amos 9:11–15), and so gave hope beyond judgment.
